Capitalizing on the deployment experience of Codendi, NovaForge, FusionForge (ex-GForge), QualiPSo, InriaForge, Picoforge and Savane, the Coclico project aims at joining together the efforts of partners who are users, as well as stakeholders in software forges initiatives. 

The forges are essential Web environments for collaborative development of software. The dynamics of development of these platforms is today a key element in addressing the issues faced by companies in terms of collaborative and distributed development. 

These have become major challenges in particular for the success of complex projects such as critical information systems and embedded software solutions, which integrate various modules and technologies: not only software, but also hardware and semiconductor technologies. 


The forges were popularized initially by the platforms SourgeForge, and later GForge. Today, a large number of projects use GForge or its modified versions, making it a de facto standard for software forges. More than 30.000 developers at the project's partner enterprises and more than 200.000 in the GForge community thus profit from such platforms. 

The Coclico project aims at the progressive convergence of forges derived from the Sourceforge/GForge base to find the Open Source (OSS) forges dynamics and to structure an open source ecosystem for which there exists a critical mass in France. Coclico thus constitutes a federating driver of the industrial and academic actors in this field who are largely present in the covered areas of the System@tic and Minalogic clusters. 

The principal awaited results of the project are: 

* Re-dynamization of the Open Source development community around FusionForge and PlanetForge 
* Definition of an open integration model 
* Data integrity and confidentiality
* Exchange of data in real-time between various forges
* Features for industrial use and quality assurance (traceability of information, support of software engineering methodologies, interaction with the user's workstation). 

To achieve its goals, the project will be based on research conducted in the semantic domain, in novel modes of interaction, safety, and data synchronization. 

The project will industrialize prototypes resulting from R&D projects like QualiPSo and will seek to develop a synergy between the various initiatives at the national and international level like NESSI, Morfeo, Trustie, OSOR, etc.

All the results of the project will be provided under open source licensing and contributed to the FusionForge.org community so as to maximize the impact of the work undertaken. Keeping this in perspective, the project involves "key persons" who have been contributing for several years to the Open Source community developing Gforge and then FusionForge. This participation should structure the future of the FusionForge.org community and the perpetuate the PlanetForge community which will profit from a strong impulse to boost their activity. 

The assistance of public funding makes it possible to bring the initial necessary impulse. The expected benefits relate to a mutualisation of the development efforts involving a reduction of the overall costs, productivity gains related to the improvement of the development infrastructures, the installation of a framework for valorization and the technology transfer of the results of projects in software engineering like MIND, Helios or TopCased, the support for employment by the provision of the development for service providers and commercial offers like Codendi, FusionForge and Novaforge.
